The Foundation Year
Every grade matters β but 9th grade sets the baseline. Start strong, explore broadly, and build the systems that will carry you through.

Academics
- The single most important academic goal: establish the habit of performing at the highest level your school offers. If honors sections exist, take them. If you're ready for a 9th-grade AP, take it β but only if you can genuinely succeed.
- A GPA that starts at 3.5 in 9th grade requires a 4.0 in every subsequent semester to reach 3.8 by graduation. Starting strong is far easier than recovering.
- Build study systems early: use a planner, learn active reading, develop the ability to write a coherent essay under time pressure.
- These skills are the foundation of everything that follows β AP exams, SAT/ACT, and the college application process itself.

Extracurriculars
- Explore broadly. Try the things you're curious about β you're not committed to a narrative yet.
- The student who tries five things in 9th grade and finds two that genuinely matter is in a better position than one who picks 'impressive' activities without genuine interest.
- Keep a simple record: what you tried, what you liked, what you didn't. This becomes valuable later.

Standardized Testing
- Know the landscape β understand what the SAT and ACT are, how they differ, and when you'll take them (not yet).
- No testing pressure in 9th grade. This year is about academics and habits.

Summer After 9th Grade
- The most underused resource in college prep. Something intentional should happen this summer.
- Options: enrichment program in a subject you're excited about, a meaningful community project, beginning a skill that becomes a sustained extracurricular, or simply reading widely and deeply.
- What matters is that something intentional happened β not that it was 'impressive.'

- π‘This is the year to help your student build systems, not stress. A good planner and a consistent study routine will do more than any tutoring.
- π‘Encourage exploration without pressure. The 'what matters to you?' question is more important than 'what looks good?'
- π‘Monitor GPA closely β recovery is harder than maintenance. If your student stumbles, intervene early.
